# characters

> text as your favorite character, or make your own. they keep folk's memory and can still get things done.

a **character** is a persona folk can become in your chat. pick one from the
gallery, or make your own from a name and one line. free for everyone.

  **You:** let me talk to sherlock holmes

  **folk:** you've been up since six and skipped breakfast. i can tell

  **folk:** now, what mystery have you brought me?

## start one

- **by text**: "let me talk to [name]" or "who can i talk to?"
- **on the dashboard**: open **characters**, pick one, tap **chat**
- **from a link**: someone shares a character, you tap it

on iMessage, the character sends its own contact card and your chat gets its
wallpaper. save the card so the chat shows its name and face.

## make your own

give it a name and one line about who they are:

> make a character: a grumpy retired chef who roasts my cooking

if it's a real person or a character from a show, game, or book, folk looks
them up so they sound right and remember their own story. you can
edit anything later: their look, how they talk, their first line.

you can also tell a character **who you are to them**, even someone from their
own story.

## they still get stuff done

characters keep folk's memory of you and can still set reminders, check your
calendar, and look things up, all in character. don't want that? turn off
**does things for you** in the character's settings.

## they can text you first

characters sometimes start the conversation. never at night. to stop it, tell
them "don't text me first" or flip the switch in their settings.

## go back to folk

say "back to folk" (or switch on the dashboard). the character and everything
it remembers is saved for next time.

## share it

publish your character to the gallery so anyone can chat with it, keep it
private, or share it by link only. published characters show up on your
public profile.
