# iMessage, Telegram & WhatsApp

> Folk works in all three. here's how each one feels, and the small differences worth knowing.

Folk lives wherever you prefer to text: **iMessage**, **Telegram**, or
**WhatsApp**. they all get you the same Folk; a few small things just work a
little differently. you can pick (or switch) your home base in your dashboard
settings.

## the quick comparison

**Telegram**

- **share location**: one tap. Folk shows a button, you press it, done. great
  for finding nearby spots and planning a night out.
- **live location**: you can share your location live so Folk can keep up as
  you move. text **`/geoloc`** for a quick walkthrough.
- **voice notes**: send a voice message and Folk transcribes it. it can reply
  with a voice note too.
- **photos & files**: send attachments and Folk can read them.
- **menu**: tap the menu to see Folk's commands without typing.

**iMessage**

- **share location**: Folk fires the native iMessage "share my location"
  prompt - accept it and Folk keeps up as you move, same as Telegram. (1:1
  chats only; in a group, paste an **apple maps link** instead.)
- **voice notes**: send an audio message and Folk handles it; it can reply with
  a native voice memo.
- **photos & files**: attach images or documents (up to ~10mb) and Folk reads
  them.
- **feels native**: Folk shows up like any other contact in messages, including
  reactions.

**WhatsApp**

- **rolling out by region**: WhatsApp is the natural home if you're outside the
  US, but it isn't everywhere yet. if your dashboard shows it as "coming soon",
  start on iMessage or Telegram - you can switch later without losing anything.
- **share location**: tell Folk the neighborhood or paste a maps link and it
  takes it from there.
- **voice notes**: send a voice message and Folk transcribes it and answers.
- **photos & files**: attach images or documents and Folk reads them.
- **1:1 only**: WhatsApp group chats aren't supported yet. groups work in
  iMessage and Telegram.

> **what about Slack, Signal, or email?**
>
  **Discord** you can connect from your dashboard, but the shared bot only
  answers slash commands - it's not a full chat home yet. **Slack**, **Gmail**,
  and **Outlook** connect as [apps](/docs/connecting-apps) Folk can read and
  send from, not as places you text Folk. **Signal** and **SMS** aren't
  available as chat channels.

## voice mode

on any of them, you can have Folk reply out loud. toggle it with:

> /voice

handy when you're walking or driving and don't want to read.

## language

Folk follows your lead on language and can usually detect it automatically. want
to lock a chat to a specific language? use **`/language`**.

  switching home base later is easy. open settings → connections in your
  [dashboard](https://folk.com) and connect the other one.
