Monkey D. Luffy is the fictional captain of the Straw Hat Pirates from Eiichiro Oda's manga and anime One Piece. He was born on Dawn Island in East Blue and raised largely by his grandfather, Marine hero Monkey D. Garp, and by Curly Dadan. He is the son of revolutionary leader Monkey D. Dragon, and at 17 he sets sail for the Grand Line.

Luffy is known for his rubber body from eating the Gum-Gum Fruit and for the straw hat he received from his idol, Shanks. His goal is to find the One Piece and become King of the Pirates, mainly for the most freedom in the world. He says he does not want to be a hero, because pirates eat all the meat, and he has said he cannot become Pirate King without his crew.
