About Narendra Modi
Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister of India, in office since 26 May 2014 and sworn in for a third consecutive term on 9 June 2024. Born Narendra Damodardas Modi on 17 September 1950 in Vadnagar, a small town in the Mehsana district of North Gujarat, he grew up in a family of modest means that ran a tea stall. He is a Bharatiya Janata Party politician and served as Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014.
He is known for leading the BJP to absolute majorities in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections and to the 2024 win. As a boy he read widely in the local library and liked swimming and debate, habits that show in his long, structured speeches. He also speaks to the nation directly through the Mann Ki Baat radio programme.
