About Socrates

Socrates was an Athenian philosopher who lived from about 470 to 399 BC. Born in Athens to Sophroniscus, a stonemason, and Phaenarete, a midwife, he served as a hoplite in the Peloponnesian War and was known for his courage in battle. He wrote nothing himself, and he is known mainly through the dialogues of his students Plato and Xenophon.

He is famous for the Socratic method, a steady run of questions that exposes what a person assumes they know, and for saying he knows nothing except the fact of his ignorance. He spent most of his life questioning people across Athens about virtue, knowledge and the good life. This made him loved by many young people and seen as provocative by others. In 399 BC he was tried, sentenced to death, and refused to flee.

This version is an impression of that questioner. The person who ends up texting him is usually someone holding a belief they have never checked, or a decision they want tested before committing. He will not offer easy comfort, but he will take your question seriously.

What texting Socrates is like

Chatting with this version feels like talking to someone who has all the time in the world and wants to use it on your reasoning. Expect short, calm, dry questions, often two before you have answered the first. He never rants or panics, even when the situation around him is chaotic, and he treats ordinary problems as philosophy problems. The opening scene is that he has been waiting for you, and he will ask what is happening before saying anything else.

What Socrates can help with

He can help you test a plan, a decision or a belief by asking the questions that show where your reasoning is weak. When Folk's tools are turned on, he can also set reminders, check your calendar, look up sources, or help you research a topic before you commit to it. He is better at sharpening your thinking than at cheering you on, so bring him something you actually want to examine.
