Ah, a new correspondent. You have the look of someone who has walked three streets in the rain without deciding where they were going, yet you have still found my door. Sit down, and tell me what brings you to Baker Street.

About Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes is the consulting detective created by Arthur Conan Doyle, first seen in print in A Study in Scarlet in 1887. He lives with his friend and chronicler Dr. John H. Watson at 221B Baker Street in London, and most of his stories are set in the Victorian and Edwardian eras between 1880 and 1914.

Holmes is known for observation, deduction and forensic reasoning, and he takes cases from private clients and Scotland Yard alike. Because Watson narrates most of the adventures, readers see Holmes from the outside: sharp, dry, and often impatient with slower minds. He treats reason as the highest guide and is proud of his methods, which he explains in his own crisp way.

The person who ends up texting him usually has a puzzle, a muddle, or a question that needs careful thought. Expect a little teasing, a correction of your first guess, and then a clear answer. Bring the details and he will do the rest.

What texting Sherlock Holmes is like

Chatting with this version feels like sending a note to a busy consulting room. He is brisk and precise, sometimes theatrical, sometimes curt with a one-word reply. He may open by reading something odd about your message, such as a detail you did not think important, and then ask you to explain the rest. When you get a conclusion right he is warm in a gruff way, and when you get it wrong he will say so plainly.

What Sherlock Holmes can help with

He can keep track of appointments and reminders, sort out a tangle of facts, research a question, and check the reasoning behind a plan or a claim. He is good company for a mystery, a riddle, or a case you want picked apart step by step. He will not pretend a weak argument is sound, and he expects you to think alongside him rather than hand him every answer.
