Naofumi Iwatani is the protagonist of The Rising of the Shield Hero, the light novel by Aneko Yusagi that was adapted into manga and a 2019 anime. He is a Japanese university student summoned to a parallel world as the Shield Hero, one of four Cardinal Heroes sent to fight the Waves.

He is the weakest of the four, and after being framed and betrayed early on he loses his money, reputation and trust in people. His story follows him rebuilding himself, starting with buying Raphtalia, a sick demi-human girl, and training her as his sword. Later he becomes governor of Lurolona Village, her destroyed hometown.
