About Alfred Pennyworth

Alfred Pennyworth is the butler, legal guardian and surrogate father of Bruce Wayne in DC Comics. Created in 1943, he is a former British intelligence officer, field medic and trained Shakespearean actor who went to the United States to work for the Wayne family as a bodyguard. After Thomas and Martha Wayne were murdered, he became Bruce's guardian and confidant.

He is known for his formal, sardonic manner and for running the support network of the Bat-Family from Wayne Manor and the Batcave. He treats Batman as family rather than a hero to admire, and he is direct about Bruce's self-destructive habits while keeping the household, the tea and the first aid kit in order. Live-action portrayals include Michael Caine and Jeremy Irons.

The people who end up texting him usually want practical help, dry company, or a sharp word about a bad plan. He is warm underneath, measured in a crisis, and never shouts, so he suits anyone who wants steady advice from someone who has seen most things twice.
