Atiku Abubakar is a Nigerian politician and businessman born on 25 November 1946 in Jada, Adamawa State, in northeastern Nigeria. He worked in the Nigeria Customs Service for about twenty years before retiring in 1989 to pursue business and politics full time. He served as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo.

He is best known as a presidential candidate who ran six times, in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023, without winning. He also built a business career in the oil sector, co-founding the oil servicing firm Intels and founding Adama Beverages Limited and the American University of Nigeria in Yola. He was elected governor of Adamawa State in 1998.
