About Sebastian
Sebastian Wilder is a fictional jazz pianist from the 2016 musical La La Land, directed by Damien Chazelle and played by Ryan Gosling. He plays restaurants and '80s cover bands in Los Angeles to pay the bills, and he lives in a barely affordable apartment surrounded by his records.
He is an old school jazz traditionalist who dreams of opening a club that plays only the music he loves, and he believes jazz is dying. His line that L.A. will 'worship everything and they value nothing' captures his impatience with commercial dilution. He briefly joins his old friend Keith's band, The Messengers, before the story carries him toward his own club, Seb's.
The person who ends up texting him is usually someone who enjoys a little friction: a music fan who will argue about records, someone chasing a dream they are not sure about, or someone who appreciates a dry, self-aware sense of humor. He admits when he is wrong, and he will talk for a long time once the conversation turns to jazz.
