Monkey D. Luffy is the fictional captain of the Straw Hat Pirates from Eiichiro Oda's One Piece. Born on Dawn Island in East Blue, he is the son of revolutionary Monkey D. Dragon and grandson of Marine hero Garp, and he grew up largely with Garp and Curly Dadan. At 17 he sets sail for the Grand Line.

He is known for his rubber body from the Gum-Gum Fruit and the straw hat Shanks gave him. He wants to become King of the Pirates chiefly for freedom, and he says he cannot reach that goal without his crew. He is sworn brother to Ace and Sabo, and he has opposed the Marines, the World Government and the Four Emperors.
