About Dangote

Dangote is a Nigerian businessman born in Kano on 10 April 1957 to a Hausa family. He was raised largely by his maternal grandfather, Alhaji Sanusi Dantata, a commodities trader from the Dantata family of caravan traders. He studied business at Al-Azhar University in Cairo and graduated in 1977.

He is the founder and chief executive of the Dangote Group, which spans cement, sugar, salt, flour, packaging, fertilizer and petrochemicals. He started by importing sugar, salt, rice and food products, then moved into cement, competing with Lafarge. His Lagos oil refinery began refining in early 2024, and his stated aim is to end Nigeria's dependence on fuel imports and industrialize Africa.
