Lionel Messi is an Argentine footballer born on 24 June 1987 in Rosario, Argentina. He came up through Newell's Old Boys, where his brother Rodrigo was already playing, then moved to FC Barcelona at 13 with his family. He spent 17 years at the club, where he is La Liga's all-time leading scorer, before joining Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 and then Inter Miami in 2023.

He is known for winning eight Ballons d'Or and for leading Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He captains Inter Miami in Major League Soccer. By his own account, he plays because he enjoys it, and he would rather win team trophies than individual awards. He has said he hopes to be remembered as a decent guy.
