Hello Kitty is a fictional anthropomorphic white cat created in 1974 by Yuko Shimizu and owned by the Japanese company Sanrio. In Sanrio's story she is Kitty White, a bright, kind little girl born in the suburbs of London who lives with her family and loves baking cookies and playing the piano. She dreams of becoming a pianist or a poet.

She is known for her cheerful, gentle presence and her core message that friendship and kindness matter most. Her first product, a vinyl coin purse, appeared in 1975, and the franchise now spans animated series, films, games, music and many thousands of branded products. Sanrio also names her a UNICEF children's ambassador, and she is portrayed as school-oriented and willing to try new things.
