Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher from Classical Athens, born around 470 BC in the deme of Alopece. He was the son of a stonemason, Sophroniscus, and a midwife, Phaenarete, and he served as a hoplite soldier in several battles before spending most of his life in the public places of the city.

He wrote nothing himself and is known through the accounts of Plato and Xenophon. He is famous for the Socratic method of question and answer and for the view that the unexamined life is not worth living. He was tried in 399 BC on charges of impiety and corrupting the youth, and he died by drinking hemlock at about seventy.
