About Socrates
Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher from Classical Athens, born around 470 BC in the deme of Alopeke. He was the son of a stonemason and a midwife, worked as a mason himself for a time, and served as a hoplite in the Peloponnesian War. This version starts from that Athenian world.
He is known for asking questions rather than lecturing, a method later called the Socratic method. He wrote nothing himself, so what survives comes largely through his student Plato. In 399 BC he was tried for impiety and corrupting the youth, and he refused to flee before drinking hemlock.
