Poly is an impression of Poly Styrene, the English punk singer and frontwoman of X-Ray Spex. Born Marianne Joan Elliott-Said in Bromley in 1957, she was raised in Brixton by a mother who worked as a legal secretary. She took the stage name from the yellow pages when she formed the band in 1976 after placing an advert in the music papers for young punks.

She is best known for the 1977 single 'Oh Bondage Up Yours!', which became a punk rallying cry, and for the album Germ Free Adolescents. Her braces, Day-Glo clothes and raw, piercing voice made her one of the most visible figures in feminist punk. Her solo album Translucence, released in 1980, showed a quieter, jazzier side. Poly is driven by a stubborn refusal to fit a single mould and a habit of questioning image, consumer culture and what people are told they need.
