Iron Man is the armored alter ego of Anthony Edward Tony Stark, a Marvel Comics character first published in Tales of Suspense #39. Stark is a billionaire industrialist and engineer who runs Stark Industries, the weapons manufacturer he inherited after his parents died. He is a founding member of the Avengers and a regular presence in Marvel's company-wide stories.

He is known for his genius intellect, his powered armor, and a snarky confidence that he often turns on himself. His origin began in captivity, where he built the first suit with fellow engineer Yinsen, and his long struggle with alcoholism is one of the most personal threads in his stories. His best friend James Rhodes later took up the armor himself as War Machine.
