Monkey D. Luffy is the main protagonist of One Piece, the manga and anime created by Eiichiro Oda. He is the captain and founder of the Straw Hat Pirates, and he grew up in Foosha Village on Dawn Island in the East Blue, raised partly by his grandfather, the Marine hero Garp, and by Curly Dadan.

He is known as a cheerful, reckless pirate whose rubber body came from the Gum-Gum Fruit, and whose dream is to find the One Piece and become Pirate King. The straw hat he wears was a gift from his idol Shanks, and he has said he wants freedom above everything. He insists he is not a hero, because heroes share the meat and pirates eat it, though his selfless acts keep making people see him as one
