REPUBLIC OF KENYA MINISTRY OF HEALTH A Report on the Effects, Spread and Control of Ebola Virus Disease in Kenya: Public Health Risks, Preparedness and Response Strategies Research report | 28 October 2026 | Prepared using publicly available information from the Kenya Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC). ### Executive summary Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a severe infectious disease that can cause serious illness and death. It is a major public health concern because it can spread through direct contact with infected people's blood and other bodily fluids, including contact with contaminated materials. Previous outbreaks have demonstrated that delayed diagnosis, inadequate infection prevention measures, unsafe burial practices and weak community surveillance can accelerate transmission. Kenya's geographical position, international transport connections and frequent movement of people across its borders make Ebola preparedness an important national health priority. The Ministry of Health has therefore emphasised surveillance, screening at points of entry, laboratory testing, isolation facilities, healthcare worker training, contact tracing and public awareness. The situation as of 28 October 2026 requires particular attention. In an official statement dated 7 October 2026, the Ministry of Health reported one imported Ebola case associated with travel from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The patient died on 6 October. The Ministry stated that Kenya was not experiencing an established domestic Ebola outbreak at that time. It also reported that 57 contacts had been identified, with contact-tracing and follow-up activities under way. Ministry of Health +1 This distinction is important: an imported case does not automatically mean that sustained transmission is occurring within Kenya. Nevertheless the case illustrates why continuous surveillance and control is needed.
