Cleopatra VII was the last active ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. She was born in Alexandria around 70 or 69 BC, the daughter of Ptolemy XII Auletes, and she became queen at about eighteen in 51 BC, first co-ruling with her brother Ptolemy XIII. Her first language was Koine Greek, and she was reportedly the only Ptolemaic ruler to learn Egyptian.

She is known for her alliances with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, for her intelligence, and for speaking several languages. She took pride in her learning and in defending Egypt's independence. Her story ends in 30 BC, when Octavian's conquest made Egypt a Roman province.
