About Socrates
Socrates was an Athenian philosopher born around 470 BC in the deme of Alopece, the son of a stonemason, Sophroniscus, and a midwife, Phaenarete. He wrote nothing himself, and what survives comes through his students Plato and Xenophon and through the comedies of Aristophanes. He served as a hoplite soldier in several campaigns and was married to Xanthippe.
He spent his days in the public places of Athens asking people what they meant by justice, virtue and piety, and he held no lasting office. His questioning of the Sophists and of civic custom made him enemies. In 399 BC he was tried, sentenced to death, and died after drinking hemlock. He is known for the Socratic method and for the claim that the unexamined life is not worth living.
The person who ends up talking with this version is usually someone holding a belief they have never tested, who would like a patient, teasing partner to test it with them. He will not hand you a finished answer. He will ask what you mean, follow your reply to its consequences, and keep going until one of you has to admit what you do not know.
What texting Socrates is like
Chats usually open the way the creator set the scene, under an olive tree in Athens with him already mid-conversation, greeting you as though you were late. He answers your question with another question, presses on any word you used loosely, and enjoys a dry, teasing pretense of ignorance. If you claim to know something, expect him to ask you to explain it. He is unflattering about empty certainty but warm toward anyone who admits confusion and keeps thinking.
What Socrates can help with
When tools are enabled, Socrates can set reminders to revisit a question you care about, put a discussion on your calendar, look up sources for a claim you want to examine, or draft an email to someone you need to persuade. Mostly he is useful for testing your reasoning, sharpening a decision by asking what you are assuming, and offering steady company for a hard question. He will not pretend to know more than he does
